2013 Heels for Success at UNC Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is currently gearing up for the 2013 Heels for Success program and we need your help identifying this year’s outstanding scholars. This email is just a “save the date” so that you can plan ahead for the nomination process. You will be receiving further nomination details in early January.

What is Heels for Success?
Heels for Success is a one-day summer program to help academically-talented, risingsophomores and juniors prepare for college. Over the course of the day, students will learn techniques for approaching the SAT, explore the Carolina campus and its wide-ranging academic opportunities, as well as learn how to manage the college application process. They’ll also get the chance to connect with other outstanding students from across the country.

Who is eligible for nomination?
Heels for Success is designed for high achieving rising sophomores and juniors from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented students, first-generation college students, and those from rural areas or disadvantaged backgrounds.  Students should be academically motivated, rank in the top 10% of their class, be enrolled in a curriculum that includes (or will include) AP/IB/dual enrollment courses, foreign language, and advanced mathematics. Heels for Success nominees should show active involvement in extracurricular activities and have demonstrated leadership.

How do I nominate students?
Counselors will be asked to nominate students in January. Additionally, counselors are asked to email or fax transcripts for each student nominated no later than February 12, 2013. Further instructions on the nomination process will be emailed in early January.

Does UNC offer other similar programs for high school seniors?
Yes! Please also be on the lookout for information about the 2013 Project Uplift program that is specifically geared towards rising high school seniors.

Please let us know if you have any questions about either of these programs atUNCdiversity@admissions.unc.edu.

Sincerely,

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

    College Application Week (CAW)

    Event Reminder

    Event: College Application Week 2012

    Monday, November 12, 2012 - Friday, November 16, 2012

    1.       The dates and times for CAW 2012 are 7:30am on Monday, November 12 – 5:00pm on Friday, November 16. Students can send applications using CFNC at any time/day during this week. However, to ensure all the fee waiver options that are in effect for CAW, students must have all applications submitted by 5:00pm on Friday, November 16.
    2.       Attached is the list of Participating NC Colleges and Universities. This list can also be found on the CAW site coordinator website, www.cfnc.org/CAWSchooland on the student and family CAW website, www.cfnc.org/CAWSeniors. Please make sure that your students who apply using the College Board fee waiver, print off their confirmation page and mail it in with the fee waiver. Otherwise, their application will not be complete.
    3.       Attached is the Application Fees at a Glance document. This serves as a one page, easy reference tool for the payment selection students would need to select. This is especially helpful in the case of a student applying with the College Board fee waiver, but the NC school does not have a “fee waiver” payment option. A good rule of thumb is if there is no fee waiver option and the student qualifies for the College Board fee waiver, have them select “check/money order” and mail in their fee waiver with their confirmation page. This list can also be found on the CAW site coordinator website, www.cfnc.org/CAWSchool and on the student and family CAW website,www.cfnc.org/CAWSeniors
    4.       Attached is the Technology Guidelines document. This is a great reference to make sure your event runs smoothly. This list can also be found on the CAW site coordinator website, www.cfnc.org/CAWSchool. This serves as a suggestion of the best operating settings. If you have a different browser number and have been using CFNC.org without any issues, then you should be fine. The most important thing is toTURN OFF pop-up blockers! All of the applications open in new windows; if you have pop-up blockers turned on, the application will not be able to open.
    5.       If your students want to send electronic transcripts, make sure their accounts are up to date and match up with their NC WISE data. Students will need to have their full, legal name (the one on file with NC WISE), their birth date, their NC WISE ID, a valid email address, and their correct high school selected in their account or in the application to be able to send electronic transcript requests. Please review www.cfnc.org/CAWSchool for the FAQ document on electronic transcripts. There is also a “How to update your account” document for students on the CAW student and family site, www.cfnc.org/CAWSeniors.
    6.       If a student has already applied to a college, they should not apply to that same college again during CAW. Some colleges are reporting that in the past, students are applying for a second time to their institution during CAW. A student only needs to send one application to each of the colleges they are applying to for any given term.
    7.       Students can start an application by clicking on the “Apply” tab at the top of the CFNC.org homepage.  Next, have your students select, “to college” and then “college applications.” Here they will be able to select the college or university they would like to apply to. It is best to have your students start and complete one application at a time.
